All-New 2023 Ford Super Duty: Everything You Need to Know

2023 Ford Super Duty someone once said that pickup trucks built America, and while they may not be historically accurate, hard workers do contribute to the figurative building of a nation. With over 50% market share in mining, construction, utilities and special services for the Ford Super Duty lineup, its popularity in the US is not likely to wane anytime soon.
Automakers in the heavy-duty truck segment continue to jostle for the top spot, ticking boxes for more power, more power and more capability. Anticipation had been building since Blue Oval’s latest teaser of the new Super Duty F-Series truck – and now we finally have a look.
2023 Ford Super Duty Review
Reviewing here is the F-250, the entry point to Ford’s Super Duty lineup, but there’s nothing basic about this truck’s ability to tow and haul just about anything you can throw at it.
Ford has a variety of engines available for the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks. But it can be a little confusing because the engine displacement is very similar, but the actual power generation is very different.
And its latest, the 6.8-liter V8, has the same displacement as the previous V10 truck engine. There are four engines available, divided between two gas-powered engines and two diesel engines.
2023 Ford Super Duty Interior
The interior of the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty is ostensibly the smartest, and the cabin has been designed to be functional and comfortable whichever row you sit in. The mid-screen measures eight inches on the base model, while the 12-inch screen becomes standard as you move up through the trim levels.
Drivers can also customize the 12-inch digital cluster. Sound comes from Bang & Olufsen, with eight speakers or 18, depending on trim.
In the first segment, the F-250 will embed 5G capabilities with faster mapping, Wi-Fi and over-the-air updates. A unique technology worth mentioning is the new Trailer Navigation system which monitors the most efficient route to take given the size of the trailer mounted behind it.
There are also new safety features available, including intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, trailer theft warning, forward-reverse sensing, front and rear brake assist, and a full-colour head-up display. Fleet owners can also activate Fleet Start Inhibit to choose when trucks can be operated.
And when you get tired of all the work, the Max Recline Seats fold almost completely flat so you can close your eyes.
Speaking of seats, the Ford F-250 Super Duty will accommodate between two and six passengers, depending on how you choose to configure it. Historically, Ford trucks have been near the top end of the class in terms of space, though few competitors beat the F-250 when it comes to offering a fully equipped cabin.
We expect the lower trims to offer tough vinyl upholstery suitable for workhorses, while the top end of the range will likely have leather and lots of soft-touch materials.
Cargo space in the rear of the Ford F-250 Super Duty ranges between 65.4 cubic feet and 78.5 cubic feet depending on bed size, but payload capacity will likely be increased for the new model year given Ford’s bold claims.
We’ll wait for Ford to release these numbers to see how competitive they can be, but we assume that the model’s max out of 3,520 pounds on Crew Cabs and 4,260 lbs on the Regular variant will be outshone.
2023 Ford Super Duty Exterior
Finally, All-New the 2023 F250 F-Series has been redesigned inside and out – it hasn’t seen a significant update since 2017, so a refresh is highly anticipated. This may be a truck we recognize everywhere as is, but changes are welcome.
Part of the extensive exterior upgrades are seven new grille designs which not only provide improved aesthetics throughout the range, but also serve to maximize cooling when the truck is under heavy stress.
C-clamp exterior lighting underscores the look of the wide, rugged front end, and LED headlamps are available throughout the range. Ford says that under-hood air pressure is also reduced on the new model, thanks to the long and functional side vents.
As usual, the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty can be had as a Regular Cab, SuperCab, or in a Crew Cab configuration, with the latter two options letting you choose between an eight-foot cargo box or a 6 ¾-foot box. The Regular Cabin only comes with a longer bed.
The F-250 truck can be further customized via available appearance packages that change trims, wheel designs and even paint combinations. The Off-Road XL package adds 33-inch tires, raised air dams, skid plates and water rafter axle ventilation tubes.
Likewise, the Tremor Off-Road Package adds front end lift, 35-inch Goodyear tires, and 18-inch model-specific wheels.
Other exterior options include the Sport Appearance Package, which features a dark-painted grille, platform running boards and larger, sturdier wheels; The Black Appearance Package does exactly what it says on the box – black accents were added to the exterior of the Ford F-250 Super Duty to make it stand out even more.
For 2023, Ford’s exterior colors on the F-250 Super Duty include Race Red, Oxford White, Iconic Silver, Stone Grey, Agate Black, Antimatter Blue, and Carbonized Gray without asking for more money.
For an additional fee, you can have Rapid Red, Star White or Azure Grey. And, in terms of wheel size, 17-, 18- and 20-inch items are available.
Ford F-250 Super Duty Dimensions
Dimensions on the Ford F-250 Super Duty can be a confusing jumble of numbers due to variations in cab configurations, bed lengths, and wheelbase options. The wheelbase starts at 141.1 inches in the 4×2 Regular Cab and reaches 175.9 inches in the long wheelbase Crew Cab.
Maximum overall length is 266.2 inches in the longest Crew Cab, while 231.8 inches Regular Cab is the shortest. In terms of height, the F-250 is 81.6 inches tall in a short-wheelbase Crew Cab guise with a 4×4; other variants are not as high. It’s a wide truck too, at 80 inches wide excluding mirrors – 105.9 inches if you do the math.
Minimum ground clearance is 9.2 inches, while the SuperCab and Crew Cab with the long wheelbase are an inch higher than that. Those who intend to go off-road or need to tackle more rugged terrain with their 2023 F-250 Super Duty can rest assured that the approach/breakover/departure angles are conducive in 4×4 guise.
Ford hasn’t released curb weight specs for its new Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, but the outgoing model weighs between 5,677 pounds and 7,538 lbs, which is par for the course in the segment.
Ford F-250 Super Duty Engine and Performance
The new F-Series targets the highest towing and payload numbers in its class, and while we don’t have specs for horsepower or torque yet, we’re likely to see some big numbers considering the automaker has stated it aims to beat rivals. With this in mind, the F-250 will be available with four engine options, including the new gas unit we speculated about a while ago.
The new powerplant is the 6.8 liter V8 naturally aspirated gas engine, and is accompanied by a new high output 6.7 liter V8 Power Stroke diesel engine. The former comes with more low-end torque than ever, while the latter boasts a unique turbo, upgraded exhaust manifolds and tuning that Ford says will put the heavy-duty hauler in the high end in terms of output.
We also saw the 430-hp 7.3-liter V8 and regular 1,050-lb-ft Power Stroke V8 diesel return, with the latter updated for longer maintenance intervals. No matter what engine you use for your Ford F-250 Super Duty, a ten-speed automatic transmission works to transfer power to the rear wheels on lower trims. From the XLT trim onwards, all trucks have standard four-wheel drive.
As for 0-60 times, that’s less important in a truck this size, but it’ll be fast enough to get you to work on time if you can find a way to get past the traffic.
Ford hasn’t provided formal towing capacity figures yet, and to avoid a court case due to false advertising, likely wanted to make sure they got it right before putting it out there. However, the manufacturer has specified that it wants to tow and haul the most in its class, so we’re expecting impressive numbers here, exceeding its current goose neck maximum of 22,800 pounds.

F-250 V8 6.8 Liters
Let’s start with the latest Ford Super Duty engine, the 6.8 liter V8. It replaces the long-standing 6.2-liter V8. It’s derived from Ford’s 7.3-liter Godzilla engine, so it’s also an iron block with an aluminum head. While retaining the same 7.3-liter bore, the crank stroke has been shortened from 3.98 inches to 3.64 inches.
Compression is increased slightly from 7.3 liters 10.5:1 lb-ft to 10.8:1 lb-ft. While higher compression engines usually require richer gasoline, Ford says it still recommends 87 octane gasoline.
The gas burner is so new that Ford hasn’t released a horsepower or torque rating yet. So the engine that is replaced has a power of 385 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The larger 7.3-liter V8 puts out 430 hp and 475 lbs of torque. We expect two things to happen in this case.
We expect that the 5.3 liter will see an increase in horsepower and torque. So we’re pretty confident that the new 6.8 will make around 400 to 420 hp, with a torque rating of around 460 lb-ft.
7.3-Liter F-250 Godzilla V8
As we mentioned earlier, the 7.3-liter V8 is Ford’s top-of-the-line Super Duty petrol engine. Many things are the same with its 6.8 liter derivative. Compression and stroke are the only real differences. Both are sequential multi-port direct injection engines. And both might be considered old-school, being pushrod engines with two valves per cylinder, as opposed to an overhead cam.
They’re also naturally aspirated, though adding a supercharger or turbocharging in the near future should create a nice power increase. But Ford has found a way to keep them competitive and clean. At this time, Ford doesn’t provide power or torque specifications, which leads us to believe both figures will increase from 2022.
6.7 Liter PowerStroke Ddiesel and V8 High-Output Diesel
The 6.7 PowerStroke has been Ford’s flagship diesel engine for more than a decade. It has seen continuous improvements in both horsepower and torque. The two are identical, with one big difference.
The High Output version has a water-cooled turbocharger according to turbos.com. This allows extra cooling of the bearings, which improves longevity and response. But the main benefit can actually be when the engine is turned off.
As soon as the turbocharger stops rotating, the accumulated heat flows to the turbo center. It can fry the bearings after so many cycles. The water in the center of the turbo helps dissipate heat from the bearings, adding to turbocharger longevity. That is the difference between the two PowerStroke diesel engines.
Ford F-250 Super Duty Gas Mileage
An important number in a segment where capability is a priority – but the downside to high output figures are similarly high fuel consumption rates. We don’t have data for the two new powertrains yet, but the familiar 7.3-liter V8 from 2022 managed around 11 mpg combined in real-life testing.
Highway figures are around 14.6 mpg. Owner reports indicate that the standard diesel motor produces about 14 mpg combined as well.
We know that fuel tank size will depend on which engine you choose, along with body style – a 34 gallon tank is standard on both fuel engines, but the longer wheelbase Crew Cab gets a 48 gallon tank.
For regular diesel, a 29 gallon fuel tank is standard on the Regular Cab and short wheelbase Crew Cab, expanding to 34 gallons with the long wheelbase SuperCab and its standard wheelbase Crew Cab. The only diesel with a 48 gallon tank is the Crew Cab with a longer wheelbase. Fuel capacities for high output diesels have not been published at the time of writing.

2023 Ford Super Duty Release Date
The Ford F-250 Super Duty release date is set for early 2023, according to the automaker, with several trims and features available in the spring of that year. Its rival, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, will be out at around the same time.
